Science
Welcome to our Science Page
Hello, I’m Mrs Canty, the Science Subject Leader at Perryfields Junior School.
Science has always been a passion of mine, and this is rooted in my background studying sports science. Through this, I developed a deep understanding of how the human body works and how science plays a vital role in keeping us healthy and active. This links closely with our school’s curriculum driver of health and well-being, as I believe science empowers children to make informed choices about their bodies, lifestyles, and the world around them.
My vision for science at Perryfields is to inspire curiosity, encourage questioning, and develop confident learners who are excited to explore and understand the world. I want every child to see themselves as a scientist—someone who investigates, discovers, and thinks critically. Through a carefully planned and ambitious curriculum, we aim to build knowledge and skills step by step, ensuring all children can succeed and develop a lifelong love of science.
Intent (What we want for our children):
In science, we want you to:
Understand the world around you and how things work
Ask questions and investigate to find answers
Be curious and excited to learn new things
Feel confident to challenge yourself and try your best
See how science links to everyday life and your own health
Use scientific words to explain your ideas clearly
Build your knowledge step by step so you remember more over time
Implementation (What science looks like in school):
This is how we help you learn science:
You will have science lessons every week
Lessons follow a clear structure to help you understand and remember more
You will carry out investigations and experiments to find things out for yourself
You will be encouraged to ask your own questions
Teachers will use exciting resources to make learning fun and clear
You will learn how to use equipment safely and correctly
You might learn outside or work with visitors and experts
You will revisit previous learning to help it stick in your memory
You will learn new scientific vocabulary and use it in your work
You will take part in enrichment days to see how science works in real life
Impact (What you will achieve):
By the time you leave Perryfields, you will:
Enjoy science and be curious about the world
Have the knowledge expected for your age (and often more!)
Be able to remember and use what you have learned in real life
Ask thoughtful questions and think carefully about answers
Work well with others during investigations
Explain your ideas clearly and use scientific reasoning
At Perryfields, we believe science is for everyone. Through engaging lessons, hands-on experiences, and a focus on health and well-being, we aim to nurture confident, curious learners who are ready to explore the world around them.
