Phonics
Welcome to our Phonics page
Hello, I’m proud to be the Subject Leader for Phonics.
I am passionate about helping every Key Stage 2 child develop the skills and confidence to become a fluent, independent reader. Strong phonics knowledge is essential at this stage, as it underpins reading fluency, comprehension, and access to the wider curriculum.
Early intervention is central to our approach. We carefully identify pupils who need additional support and provide targeted phonics intervention to address gaps and build confidence. This ensures that every child can keep up and fully engage with their learning.
I am committed to clear progression throughout Key Stage 2, helping children strengthen their decoding skills, improve fluency, and develop independence in reading. By equipping pupils with these essential skills, we support our curriculum driver of lifelong learning, enabling children to become confident, capable learners ready for the next stage of their education and life beyond.
My goal is simple: to give every child the phonics knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to read with understanding, access the full curriculum, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Our Intent (What We Want for Our Children)
At Perryfields Junior School, we want to equip children with the skills needed to:
Become confident, independent readers with secure phonics knowledge.
Decode words accurately and fluently, making reading an enjoyable and accessible tool for learning across all subjects.
Access targeted support through early identification and intervention, ensuring no child is left behind.
Build resilience, independence, and confidence in reading, enabling them to engage fully with the wider curriculum.
Develop a lifelong love of reading that supports learning now and in the future.
Implementation (How We Teach Phonics)
At Perryfields Junior School, phonics is delivered systematically to help all children develop strong reading skills. Children are identified early through baseline and reading assessments, with additional phonics assessments from our Phonics Champion to target individual needs.
Phonics is taught weekly in small groups or 1-to-1 sessions using precision teaching.
Children are matched with phonics books at their level to practise decoding, build fluency, and gain confidence.
Children on the phonics programme are also daily readers, reinforcing skills at school and at home.
Teachers link phonics to spelling lessons where appropriate, helping children apply their knowledge across the curriculum.
Progress is monitored through a rigorous tracking system, ensuring interventions are effective and every child continues to make strong progress.
Impact (What this means for our children)
Through our phonics provision, children gain the essential skills and support they need to become confident and capable readers.
Children become confident, fluent readers, able to access the wider curriculum with ease.
Early identification and targeted support ensure all pupils make progress, including those who need extra help.
Phonics teaching strengthens spelling, writing, and overall literacy skills, supporting learning across subjects.
Daily reading and regular practice foster independence, resilience, and a love of reading, setting children up for lifelong learning.
Rigorous monitoring ensures that interventions are effective and that every child continues to develop and succeed.
