Art & Design
Welcome to our Art & Design page
Hello, my name is Miss Harding and as the Subject Leader for Art, I am proud to lead a subject that gives every child the chance to be creative, express themselves and build confidence. Art reflects our school values of creativity and perseverance. It teaches children that it’s okay not to get things right the first time and that improvement comes from practice and patience.
I am passionate about showing pupils that art is not just about drawing and painting. In my spare time, I enjoy photography, which helps me see the world in different ways and capture small details others might miss. This supports my belief that creativity can be found in many forms and every child can discover the type of art that inspires them.
Our Intent (What we want for our children)
At Perryfields Junior School, our Art lessons follow the National Curriculum and help children to grow as creative and confident artists.
Our teaching helps children to:
Build their art skills step by step, so they improve as they move through the school
Develop their creativity and express their own ideas
Learn and practise a wide range of artistic skills
Feel inspired and excited about creating art
Explore different styles of art, famous artists and a variety of materials
Feel proud of their work and enjoy being creative
Learn about art from different cultures and around the world
Reflect on their own work and the work of others
Understand that practise and perseverance help them improve
Our Art curriculum builds knowledge and skills step by step each year, allowing children to revisit and develop their techniques as they grow. Everything we teach links closely to our school values of creativity and perseverance, helping children to become confident, resilient and independent learners.
How We Teach It (Implementation)
At Perryfields Junior School, we teach Art & Design alongside Design & Technology.
In our lessons we:
Link Art to other subjects and real-life topics, helping children use their creativity across the curriculum
Follow clear, step-by-step lessons that build knowledge and skills over time
Model techniques and use high-quality resources to inspire and support learning
Give children regular opportunities to experiment with different materials and artistic styles
Ask thoughtful questions and encourage children to use art vocabulary to discuss their ideas
Provide time to reflect on and evaluate their own work and the work of others
Promote creativity through competitions, art displays, special art days and clubs
Support and challenge all children, celebrating effort and perseverance so everyone can succeed
What this means for our children (The Impact)
By the time they leave Perryfields, we want them to:
Reach the expected standard for their age in Art
Develop a wide range of artistic skills and knowledge
Feel excited and enthusiastic about creating art
Be challenged and proud of what they achieve
Remember and use their skills in future projects
Choose the right materials and techniques for their artwork confidently
