Maths

Welcome to our Maths page

My name is Mr Robertson and I am proud to be the Maths Subject Leader at Perryfields Junior School. I am incredibly passionate about maths because it is fundamental to our curriculum and underpins so much of children’s understanding of the world around them. I believe that when children feel confident, capable and resilient in maths, they are empowered to succeed across all areas of learning and life.

Maths is more than a subject – it is a way of thinking. It develops logical reasoning, problem-solving skills and perseverance. Through maths, we equip our pupils with the knowledge, fluency and understanding they need to make sense of the world, manage money, interpret information and approach challenges with confidence. My background in financial services has strengthened my appreciation of how vital mathematical understanding is in real-life contexts and I am passionate about helping children see that relevance from an early age.

Our Intent (What we want for our children)

At Perryfields Junior School, we believe maths is a powerful tool that helps us understand the world and solve everyday problems.

We want our pupils to learn how to:

  • Follow a clear learning journey where new skills build on what they have already learned each year.

  • Become confident problem-solvers who can think carefully, explain their ideas and work accurately.

  • Challenge themselves and deepen their understanding through exciting and engaging lessons.

  • Feel successful in every lesson with the right level of support and challenge.

  • See how maths connects to real life and the wider world.

  • Develop a love of maths, curiosity and a desire to keep learning more.

How we teach it (Implementation)

Maths is taught every day in all year groups.

In our lessons:

  • We follow a clear learning journey that helps us build our skills step by step each year.

  • Every lesson includes practising our skills, explaining our thinking and solving problems.

  • We use helpful resources like counters, drawings and working walls to help us understand new ideas.

  • We start lessons with a quick “Do Now” to help us remember and practise what we’ve already learned.

  • Teachers ask thoughtful questions and give us support or challenge so everyone can succeed.

  • We practise important skills every week, like times tables, place value and the four operations — and we use Times Table Rock Stars to help make learning fun.

What this means for our children (The impact)

By the time children leave Perryfields, we want them to:

  • Children who enjoy being challenged and keep trying, even when they find something tricky.

  • Confident mathematicians who can talk about their learning and explain their thinking clearly.

  • Children who believe they can improve and grow in maths with practice and effort.

  • Pupils who use maths in other subjects and understand how it helps in real life.

  • Strong fluency skills, with quick and accurate recall of key number facts.

  • Children who can solve problems, spot patterns, make sensible guesses and test their ideas.

  • Learners who can work independently and with others, while making good progress each year.
