RE

Welcome to our Religious Education page

My name is Miss Shepherd and I am proud to be the Religious Education Subject Leader at Perryfields Junior School. I am passionate about RE because it helps children understand the diverse world around them. Religious Education is not just about learning facts — it is about exploring beliefs, asking big questions and developing respect for different perspectives.

RE plays a key role in supporting our curriculum driver of Global Citizenship. By learning about different religions and non-religious worldviews, pupils gain an understanding of the beliefs and values that shape communities locally and globally. We teach children to think critically, listen respectfully and hold balanced, well-informed conversations. These skills help them grow into thoughtful, open-minded individuals who are ready to contribute positively to a diverse society.

Our Intent (What we want for our children)

At Perryfields Junior School, we want children to:

  • Develop religious literacy — speaking confidently and respectfully about religion and worldviews

  • Explore beliefs through theology (what people believe), philosophy (why they believe it) and human/social sciences (how beliefs shape lives)

  • Build empathy, curiosity and critical thinking skills

  • Become confident in sharing ideas while respecting the views of others

Through RE, we promote pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural development, preparing them for life in modern Britain and the wider world

How We Teach It (Implementation)

In RE lessons, children will:

  • Learn about different religions and worldviews every other week.

  • Follow a clear lesson structure that helps them build their knowledge step by step

  • Ask their own questions and explore big ideas

  • Take part in respectful discussions where everyone’s voice matters

  • Use interesting resources and real-life examples to help them understand

  • Revisit previous learning so you remember more over time

  • Celebrate different religious festivals and sometimes meet visitors who share their experiences

The children's classroom will always be a safe space where they can share their thoughts respectfully and listen carefully to others.

What this means for our children (The Impact)

Because of RE at Perryfields, children will:

  • Feel confident talking about different religions and beliefs

  • Be able to explain their ideas clearly and listen to others with respect

  • Ask thoughtful questions about the world around them

  • Understand why people believe different things

  • Show kindness, tolerance and empathy towards others

  • Grow into a responsible global citizen who understands their place in a diverse world

Through RE, you don’t just learn about beliefs — you learn how to understand people
