Design and Technology

Welcome to our Design and Technology page

Hello! My name is Miss Richards, and I am proud to be the Subject Leader for Design and Technology at our school.

I am incredibly passionate about Design and Technology because it brings learning to life. DT allows children to become designers, engineers, chefs and inventors. It gives them the chance to be creative, solve real problems and see their ideas turn into something tangible. There is nothing more powerful than watching a child go from an initial idea to a finished product they are proud of.

Our curriculum driver, Learning for Life, is at the heart of our DT curriculum. Design and Technology teaches children essential life skills — resilience when things don’t go to plan, teamwork when collaborating on ideas, critical thinking when solving problems and practical skills they will use beyond the classroom. Whether they are designing a structure, evaluating a product or preparing food, they are learning skills that prepare them for the real world.

Our Intent – What We Want for Our Children

In Design and Technology, we want every child to:

  • Be creative and imaginative

  • Develop practical skills they can use in everyday life

  • Learn how to solve real-world problems

  • Take risks and learn from mistakes

  • Understand how design and technology shape the world around them

We aim to inspire children to think like designers: to explore, question, test, improve and evaluate.

Our Implementation – How We Make It Happen

We achieve this by:

  • Following a clear design process: design, make and evaluate

  • Teaching key technical knowledge and vocabulary step by step

  • Providing hands-on experiences with a range of tools and materials

  • Encouraging children to work collaboratively and independently

  • Linking projects to real-life contexts to make learning meaningful

Children build on their prior learning each year, developing increasingly sophisticated skills in designing, constructing and evaluating products.

Our Impact – The Difference It Makes

As a result of our DT curriculum, children:

  • Become confident problem solvers

  • Develop resilience and perseverance

  • Gain practical skills and technical knowledge

  • Take pride in creating purposeful products

  • Understand how their learning connects to real life

Most importantly, our children leave each stage equipped not just with knowledge, but with creativity, adaptability and the confidence to design solutions for the future — truly embodying our vision of Learning for Life.
