Modern Foreign Languages - French

Welcome to our Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) - French page

I am delighted to introduce myself as the Modern Foreign Languages (French) Subject Leader at Perryfields Junior School. For me, learning a language is about far more than words – it is about confidence, connection and well-being. Being able to communicate in another language helps children feel proud of themselves, builds their self-esteem and opens their minds to new cultures and ways of life.

French plays a powerful and natural role in supporting our school’s curriculum driver of global citizenship, as it helps children understand their place in an interconnected world and develop respect for others. It also further links beautifully with our whole-school curriculum driver of health and well-being, as language learning nurtures resilience, curiosity and a positive sense of identity. I love seeing children grow in confidence as they understand and speak French, sharing their ideas in a new and exciting way.

Our Intent (What we want for our children)

At Perryfields, we want every child to enjoy learning French and feel confident using it.

We want our pupils to learn how to:

  • feel brave and proud when they speak French

  • learn to listen, read, write and talk in another language

  • discover new countries, cultures and traditions so they can understand the wider world

  • be curious, ask questions and enjoy finding out new things

  • feel challenged and supported, and succeed by reaching their full potential

  • have fun learning French and be something they want to carry on in the future

How We Teach It (Implementation)

French is taught every week in all year groups.

  • Lessons include speaking, listening, reading and writing activities to help pupils remember and use new words.

  • Teachers will help pupils with pronunciation by group chanting and repetition.

  • Pupils will work with their talk partners, play games and take part in role play scenarios.

  • Pupils will revisit and practise what they have learned so it helps them to remember vocabulary long term.

  • Vocabulary is displayed around the classroom to support learners.

  • Children are encouraged to ask questions.

  • Everyone is supported so that all children can succeed and feel confident.

What this means for our children (The Impact)

By the time children leave Perryfields, we aim for them to:

  • Feel confident speaking and understanding French.

  • Be able to read and write simple words and sentences.

  • Understand that languages have patterns and structures.

  • Appreciate different cultures and ways of life.

  • Enjoy learning languages and feel excited to continue at secondary school.

  • Use their language skills to communicate and connect with others.

  • Feel proud of their achievements and confident in their abilities.
